KiCad MCP Server
What Is a KiCad MCP Server?
A KiCad MCP server is software that exposes selected KiCad-related operations to an AI assistant through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Several implementations exist, and their supported operations, permissions, and KiCad versions differ. Depending on the server, the assistant can list projects, read schematics and netlists, place footprints, route traces, and run design rule checks by calling the server's tools.
Anthropic introduced MCP in November 2024 and describes it as "an open standard that enables developers to build secure, two-way connections between their data sources and AI-powered tools." In MCP's architecture, an AI application such as Claude Desktop runs a client for each server it connects to, and each server exposes tools the model can call. A KiCad MCP server sits between the assistant and KiCad, and its tools decide what the assistant can read or change.
JLCPCB's guide puts it this way: "KiCad MCP is not a single product. Several open-source servers exist, and they differ in how much of your project they can change."
How a KiCad MCP Server Connects to KiCad
Servers reach KiCad in one or more of these ways:
- KiCad IPC API. KiCad's IPC API "can be used to remotely control a running instance of KiCad." JLCPCB's build ran KiCad 10.0.4 with the KiCad API turned on under Preferences > Plugins.
- Legacy SWIG-based Python bindings. The pcbnew Python module. Python can also reach KiCad through the newer IPC API. KiCad deprecated these bindings as of KiCad 9.0 and plans to remove them in KiCad 11.0. MJP-Sys/kicad-mcp-server, a fork of KiCAD-MCP-Server, uses the IPC API when it's available and falls back to SWIG. Its README labels the IPC backend experimental.
- KiCad's command-line tool. kicad-mcp runs DRC "using the KiCad CLI."
- Project files. Some servers read KiCad's files directly. MJP-Sys/kicad-mcp-server parses .kicad_sym symbol library files.
What KiCad MCP Servers Can Do
Capabilities vary widely from server to server. Three examples, from each project's documentation as of October 22, 2026:
Server | Capabilities Listed by the Project | Notes |
Lists and opens projects, extracts netlists, analyzes BOMs, and runs DRC | Needs KiCad 9.0 or newer; MIT license
Sets up projects, edits schematics, places components, routes, runs DRC and ERC, and exports files; adds JLCPCB parts data and Freerouting | Needs KiCad 9.0 or newer; MIT license; names Claude Desktop and GitHub Copilot in VS Code as clients. The README directs new development to Konnect, a separate AGPL-3.0 KiCad 10 plugin, and says this server remains maintained
A read-only "default" profile for review, a "build" profile for edits with plan, apply, verify, and rollback, and a "release" profile for human-gated manufacturing output; optional external Freerouting | KiCad 10.0.x is the primary supported line, and 9.x is excluded; JLCPCB used it with KiCad 10.0.4 |
KiCad MCP Servers in Practice
- JLCPCB, October 14. Claude Code redesigned a two-layer, 63 x 33 mm XL4015 buck converter through kicad-mcp-pro. In that configuration the server provided no autorouter, so Claude Code wrote a basic router in Python that used A* pathfinding on a 0.1 mm grid. A problem wiring multi-unit symbols needed a 9-line patch to JLCPCB's private copy of the server, and Gerber, BOM, and CPL files weren't generated in that session because the server's manufacturing profile was off. Before the build, JLCPCB wrote down every intended net and pin. Comparing that list pin for pin with the exported netlist caught a short between the ISENSE and ISET nets that KiCad's ERC had raised only as a warning.
- A6M-Zero, September 4. The author had Claude Fable 5 design an RP2350 e-ink board in KiCad through a KiCad MCP server that the post doesn't name. Freerouting routed 69 connections and left 49 open, and Claude completed the remaining connections. The board was fabricated, assembled, and powered up.
Part 2 of Quilter's GPT-6 Astra series compares the public Astra tests, including runs with no KiCad MCP server installed.
How to Choose a KiCad MCP Server
Before you install a server, check its documentation for:
- Operations. Which tools it exposes for reading, editing, routing, checking, and exporting.
- Write access. Which tools can change the project, and whether the default setup is read-only.
- Compatibility. Which KiCad versions and operating systems it supports, and whether it uses the IPC API or the deprecated SWIG bindings.
- Routing. Whether routing comes from KiCad's own tools, Freerouting, or something else, and what has to be installed for it to work.
- Evidence. Which capabilities someone has shown working in a published build, and which are only listed in the README.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is There One KiCad MCP Server?
No. "KiCad MCP server" names a category of integrations. lamaalrajih/kicad-mcp, mixelpixx/KiCAD-MCP-Server, and oaslananka/kicad-mcp-pro are separate projects with different tools, permissions, and supported KiCad versions, so check which one a demo or guide used.
Which KiCad Version Do KiCad MCP Servers Need?
It depends on the server and its release. As of October 22, 2026, lamaalrajih/kicad-mcp and mixelpixx/KiCAD-MCP-Server list KiCad 9.0 or newer, and oaslananka/kicad-mcp-pro supports KiCad 10.0.x and excludes 9.x. KiCad deprecated its SWIG Python bindings as of 9.0 and plans to remove them in 11.0, so check a server's compatibility notes before you upgrade KiCad.
Can a KiCad MCP Server Route a PCB?
Some can. mixelpixx/KiCAD-MCP-Server lists routing tools and a Freerouting integration, oaslananka/kicad-mcp-pro lists Freerouting as an external option that has to be configured, and Freerouting supports MCP itself. In JLCPCB's October 14 build, the server configuration had no autorouter, so Claude Code wrote its own router.
Is a KiCad MCP Server the Same as Computer Use?
They're different ways to work in KiCad, and a workflow can combine them. MCP gives an AI application structured tool calls, while computer use operates an application through its interface, the way a person would. Behind its tools, a KiCad MCP server may use the IPC API, KiCad's command-line tool, project files, or interface automation. OpenAI showed its GPT-6 Astra launch demo in KiCad as an example of computer use.
How Do I Keep an AI Assistant From Breaking My KiCad Project?
Work on a copy of the project, and start with a server whose default limits changes. JLCPCB picked kicad-mcp-pro "because its read-only default limits what an AI error can change." Before the AI builds anything, write down every intended net and the pins on it. Afterward, export the netlist from the AI-generated schematic and compare it pin for pin with that list, check that the board matches the reviewed schematic, and run ERC and DRC. In JLCPCB's build, the pin-for-pin comparison caught a short that ERC reported only as a warning.
